Buhari holds closed-door meeting with Tinubu ahead of Lagos APC gov primary

Buhari holds closed-door meeting with Tinubu ahead of Lagos APC gov primary

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday met behind closed doors with the National Leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

The meeting which was held inside the Presidential Villa, Abuja, came barely 24 hours before the APC governorship primary for the state slated for Tuesday.

It was gathered that the state Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, was, however, not part of the meeting Buhari had with Tinubu.

A Presidency source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the meeting to one of our correspondents. “There was a meeting. But I don’t know what the meeting was about,” the source said.

Tinubu and other critical stakeholders in the party in the state had adopted Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu as their preferred choice for the party’s governorship ticket despite the fact that the state governor had expressed his intention to seek re-election.

The party leader had accused Ambode of deviating from the development blueprint prepared for the state.

While confirming the meeting between Buhari and Tinubu, another source in the camp of the former Lagos State governor, however, said nothing has changed.

He said, “You know that Asiwaju meets regularly with the President. They discuss party and the nation’s matters regularly. So there is nothing unusual about this meeting.” When asked if Buhari had succeeded in resolving the matter, he replied, “What issue will be resolved when tomorrow (Tuesday) is primary? “There is nothing to resolve. The people will elect their candidate at the primary on Tuesday. “Asiwaju is back in Lagos from Abuja. Everybody is preparing for the primary.” Ambode meets NWC panel, insists on credible primary

However, Ambode on Monday met with the panel appointed by the National Working Committee of the APC to conduct the primary in the state, insisting on a level playing field for all aspirants.

The governor, who spoke when he received members of the panel led by its Chairman, Mr Clement Ebri, said it was important that the election was free, fair and credible.

2019 election: Pastor Chris Okotie officially declares to contest for presidency

2019 election: Pastor Chris Okotie officially declares to contest for presidency

The General Overseer of the Household of God Church, Rev. Chris Okotie has officially declared to join the 2019 presidential race.

Okotie declared his intention to run under the platform of the Fresh Democratic Party (FDP) on Monday, during a service to commemorate Nigeria’s 58th Independence Day at the Household of God Church.

The cleric, who contested the 2007 presidential elections and lost, called on other political parties to adopt him as a consensus candidate. “I want to re-affirm my call for an interim government and to ask those that are concerned, who are the political actors to consider me as a consensus candidate. “I have referred to myself as a consensus remedial facilitator because of the existential threats that we have now and I think that it’s time for us to lay aside the habiliments of our political affiliations and to embrace a new nationalistic philosophy that can salvage this country at this time,” Okotie said.  - #regrann

Nigeria at 58: Buhari reveals those behind herdsmen killings, says conflict not religious

Nigeria at 58: Buhari reveals those behind herdsmen killings, says conflict not religious

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday revealed those behind the lingering crisis between herdsmen and farmers in some states of the federation.

Buhari said those who are determined to plant the seeds of discord and disunity among Nigerians were responsible for the crisis.

He made the disclosure during his Independence Day nationwide broadcast.

The President, while assuring Nigerians of adequate security, also vowed to ensure that perpetrators are made to face the full wrath of the law.

According to Buhari, “The age-long conflict between herders and farmers that was being exploited by those seeking to plant the seeds of discord and disunity amongst our people, is being addressed decisively.

“We will sustain and continue to support the commendable efforts by all including civil society organisations, local and states governments and our traditional and religious leaders in finding durable solution to this problem.

I am Nigeria’s next president, says Kwankwaso

I am Nigeria’s next president, says Kwankwaso Rabiu Kwankwaso Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, former Kano State governor and PDP presidential aspirant, says he will “easily beat President Muhamadu Buhari” if given his party’s ticket to contest the presidential election in 2019. Kwankwaso, who spoke on Thursday in Jos, during a consultation visit to the North-Central state, said he has the ability to wrestle power from the APC. “I come from a state which has the highest number of voters that can sway an election in my favour. “If I pick the PDP ticket, I will be the next president of this nation. “I have the hunger to save Nigeria from its current troubles. I have my plan to make Nigeria a better country for all. “I have massive support from the North-West and will get even more supporters if given the ticket,” he said. The aspirant promised to run an all-inclusive government, a leadership virtue he accused the APC administration of lacking. “A key solution to Nigeria’s problems is a participatory government that will ward off mutual suspicion and distrust. It will address the gap in communication which is largely responsible for farmer/herder clashes, religious violence and ethnic crisis in the country,” he said. (NAN)

Osun rerun is open robbery – PDP

Femi Makinde, Osogbo The Peoples Democratic Party has described the rerun election held in Osun State as the biggest electoral robbery ever witnessed in the history of the state. The Chairman of the PDP in Osun State, Mr Soji Adagunodo, said this in a statement made available to our correspondent in Osogbo on Thursday. Adagunodo said the alleged brazen electoral fraud would be resisted by the party, saying the stolen mandate would be resisted in court. He said the election was openly rigged by the All Progressives Congress with the support of security personnel in broad daylight, Adagunodo said, “Thousands of eligible voters were chased away from their homes in Orolu, Ife North and Ife South Local Government Areas in the early hours of today. “Scores of our supporters in those local governments were shot and stabbed on their way to polling centres and in the full glare of security men. Hundreds of people holding PVCs from other polling units were accredited and allowed to vote in Osogbo and Ife South Local Governments. “PDP agent in Olode was axed and abducted at 7am today. Media men and election observers were denied access in several polling units. By the time access was granted to journalists about 11am, ballot boxes had been stuffed by APC agents acting in connivance with INEC officials.” The PDP chairman said it was regrettable that election in seven polling units could not be freely and fairly conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission. He said, “We reject any returns of results from this sham and call on the INEC authorities in Abuja to direct that the so-called supplementary election result collation be put on hold now. “We equally invite leaders of thought in Nigeria and the International community to rise up now to rescue Nigeria’s democracy from being ruined. “We equally call on all members and supporters of our party to resist any attempt to foist concocted election results on the people of Osun using all legal means at their disposal.” Sources : Punch
