2019 election: Pastor Chris Okotie officially declares to contest for presidency
The General Overseer of the Household of God Church, Rev. Chris Okotie has officially declared to join the 2019 presidential race.
Okotie declared his intention to run under the platform of the Fresh Democratic Party (FDP) on Monday, during a service to commemorate Nigeria’s 58th Independence Day at the Household of God Church.
The cleric, who contested the 2007 presidential elections and lost, called on other political parties to adopt him as a consensus candidate. “I want to re-affirm my call for an interim government and to ask those that are concerned, who are the political actors to consider me as a consensus candidate. “I have referred to myself as a consensus remedial facilitator because of the existential threats that we have now and I think that it’s time for us to lay aside the habiliments of our political affiliations and to embrace a new nationalistic philosophy that can salvage this country at this time,” Okotie said. - #regrann

Nigeria at 58: Buhari reveals those behind herdsmen killings, says conflict not religious
Nigeria at 58: Buhari reveals those behind herdsmen killings, says conflict not religious
President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday revealed those behind the lingering crisis between herdsmen and farmers in some states of the federation.
Buhari said those who are determined to plant the seeds of discord and disunity among Nigerians were responsible for the crisis.
He made the disclosure during his Independence Day nationwide broadcast.
The President, while assuring Nigerians of adequate security, also vowed to ensure that perpetrators are made to face the full wrath of the law.
According to Buhari, “The age-long conflict between herders and farmers that was being exploited by those seeking to plant the seeds of discord and disunity amongst our people, is being addressed decisively.
“We will sustain and continue to support the commendable efforts by all including civil society organisations, local and states governments and our traditional and religious leaders in finding durable solution to this problem.

I am Nigeria’s next president, says Kwankwaso
I am Nigeria’s next president, says Kwankwaso
Rabiu Kwankwaso
Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, former Kano State governor and PDP presidential aspirant, says he will “easily beat President Muhamadu Buhari” if given his party’s ticket to contest the presidential election in 2019.
Kwankwaso, who spoke on Thursday in Jos, during a consultation visit to the North-Central state, said he has the ability to wrestle power from the APC.
“I come from a state which has the highest number of voters that can sway an election in my favour.
“If I pick the PDP ticket, I will be the next president of this nation.
“I have the hunger to save Nigeria from its current troubles. I have my plan to make Nigeria a better country for all.
“I have massive support from the North-West and will get even more supporters if given the ticket,” he said.
The aspirant promised to run an all-inclusive government, a leadership virtue he accused the APC administration of lacking.
“A key solution to Nigeria’s problems is a participatory government that will ward off mutual suspicion and distrust. It will address the gap in communication which is largely responsible for farmer/herder clashes, religious violence and ethnic crisis in the country,” he said.

Osun rerun is open robbery – PDP
Femi Makinde, Osogbo
The Peoples Democratic Party has described the rerun election held in Osun State as the biggest electoral robbery ever witnessed in the history of the state.
The Chairman of the PDP in Osun State, Mr Soji Adagunodo, said this in a statement made available to our correspondent in Osogbo on Thursday.
Adagunodo said the alleged brazen electoral fraud would be resisted by the party, saying the stolen mandate would be resisted in court.
He said the election was openly rigged by the All Progressives Congress with the support of security personnel in broad daylight,
Adagunodo said, “Thousands of eligible voters were chased away from their homes in Orolu, Ife North and Ife South Local Government Areas in the early hours of today.
“Scores of our supporters in those local governments were shot and stabbed on their way to polling centres and in the full glare of security men. Hundreds of people holding PVCs from other polling units were accredited and allowed to vote in Osogbo and Ife South Local Governments.
“PDP agent in Olode was axed and abducted at 7am today. Media men and election observers were denied access in several polling units. By the time access was granted to journalists about 11am, ballot boxes had been stuffed by APC agents acting in connivance with INEC officials.”
The PDP chairman said it was regrettable that election in seven polling units could not be freely and fairly conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
He said, “We reject any returns of results from this sham and call on the INEC authorities in Abuja to direct that the so-called supplementary election result collation be put on hold now.
“We equally invite leaders of thought in Nigeria and the International community to rise up now to rescue Nigeria’s democracy from being ruined.
“We equally call on all members and supporters of our party to resist any attempt to foist concocted election results on the people of Osun using all legal means at their disposal.”

Cosby is expected to serve out his sentence at SCI Phoenix in Collegeville, Pennsylvania. The prison is brand new, and said to be state of the art.
SCI Phoenix is a maximum security, 3,830-bed, handicap-accessible, state-of-the-art prison which began operating earlier this year. The $400million prison is staffed by 1,200 full-time employees and features 164 acreage inside its double ring of razor wire fences and a 1.5mile perimeter.

The cells have bunk beds and storage lockers, as well as a stainless steel toilet and sink combo and a small desk and stool. Unlike older prisons, SCI Phoenix's manual key locks have been replaced with electronic cell doors monitored from a central location.
Immediately after his sentencing, Cosby was escorted from the courthouse and into a dark SUV before being taken to the Montgomery County Correctional Facility.

Lagos Bans Hijab in Schools, Pending Supreme Court Decision
The Lagos State Government yesterday noted that it would not allow the use of Hijab in all its public schools until the Supreme Court “determines an appeal seeking to upturn the decision of a Court of Appeal.”
The state government equally clarified that religious institutions were exempted from paying taxes, according to the state laws, though any religious institution engaging in commercial activities was liable to pay taxes, accordingly.
The State Commissioner for Home Affairs, Dr. Abdulateef Abdulhakeem on a Television Continental (TVC) programme, ‘YourView’ yesterday, said the state government would not enforce the appellate court’s decision on the use of Hijab.
A Court of Appeal sitting in Lagos had in July 2016 unanimously set aside the judgment of a Lagos High Court, which banned students in public schools in the state from putting on the Hijab with their school uniforms.
The court presided over by Justice AB Gumel held that the appeal was meritorious and should be allowed. Gumel held that the use of the Hijab was an Islamic injunction and also an act of worship, hence it would constitute a violation of the appellants’ rights to stop them from wearing it in public schools.
Dissatisfied with the decision of the appellate court, the state government approached the apex court, challenging the court decision, which reinstated the use of Hijab in the state’s public schools on July 21, 2016.
Confronted with a question on the refusal of the state government to enforce the court decision on the use of Hijab, Abdulhakeem noted that the state government “firmly believes in the rule of law and will continue to uphold it.”
He explained that the state government did not enforce the judgment of the appellate court, which reinstated the use of Hijab in the public schools on July 21, 2016 until the state government had already appealed the judgment.
According to the commissioner, the state government is awaiting the decision of the Supreme Court on this matter. We cannot enforce the decision of the lower court until the Supreme Court determines the appeal before it.
He also clarified the position of the law that exempted religious institutions from paying taxes, noting that all religious institutions were exempted, though those involved in commercial activities was liable to pay taxes.
“Religious institutions are not taxable under the Lagos laws. If religious institutions engage in business transactions, they are liable to pay taxes. But as far as the institution is concerned, it is exempted from paying tax,” he said.
He explained that the law was not applicable “to those who convert their buildings into mosque to avoid paying taxes,” adding that we have made it abundantly clear that they are not allowed to convert residential premises into religious centres.
“So, people should just respect God the way the state government has respected God and do not come under that arena to avoid payment of taxes,” he said.
He debunked reports that it was planning to commence paying salaries to religious leaders in the state, saying the claim was totally untrue and misleading.
He said the reports did not contain any iota of truth, thereby urging the residents “to disregard it in its entirety. Contrary to the reports, we have no plan to employ imams and pastors. We are not willing to delve into a private realm.
“There is a symbiotic relationship between the state government and faith-based organisations. It is a mutually beneficial relationship which has contributed to the growth and development of the state,” the commissioner said.
Abdulhakeem had been quoted to have said the state government would soon place religious leaders on the State salary structure to encourage them to use their Pulpit and the Minbar to re-orientate citizenry to shun corruption and immorality.
He however clarified that he was misunderstood or misquoted, explaining how he encouraged religious leaders “to be advocates against corruption because religious leaders have millions of adherents and they enjoy the allegiance of millions of followers.
“We expect them to advocate good governance and selflessness so that they can influence their members positively. In Lagos State, our success is that we have cutting-edge approaches to relating with religious leaders
