PHOTOS: Nollywood Filmaker & Director, Ansa Bassey Kpokpogri, Is Dead!

This is another sad moment for Nollywood.Top Nollywood filmmaker and Director, Ansa Bassey Kpokpogri is dead. The Calabar-born mother of one reportedly died of pains from peptic ulcer.

Filmmaker Uduak Isong Oguamanam, younger sister of Emem Isong, took to her Facebook to write a glowing tribute to the University of Calabar graduate, whom she described as a friend, partner and colleague. She wrote...

"Grief. It makes you remember things. Minute details, like the sound of their feet, the colour of their hair and the sweet smell of their body spray. It makes you regret. The holidays you never took, the movies you never watched together, the visits you kept planning to but never made.It reminds you. Of your own mortality. You wonder if there's a row call and what your number is on the list.

Death doesn't warn you. One moment you're laughing with a loved one, your head thrown back, with wanton abandon, the next your eyes are bloodshot from weeping for a loss so deep no one can understand.

I'll never understand, never come to terms with your death. You were many things to me; Friend. Sister. Business partner. Supporter. Colleague. My life was better because you were in it. Sleep well my beautiful ,adorable ,amazing Ansa. Till we meet again to part no more".

Kidnapping now attracts 25 years jail in Ogun

The Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun, on Monday signed into law a bill stipulating tough penalties for violent crimes, including 25 years jail term for convicted kidnappers.
Also captured in the new law are armed robbery, kidnapping, cultism and other related offences.
Mr. Amosun assented to the bill at a simple ceremony in his office attended by the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Suraj Adekunbi, and other principal officers of the House.
Also present at the ceremony were the state Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Illiyasu, State Director, State Security Service, Kabiru Sali; Commissioner of Justice and Attorney General of the state, Olumide Ayeni; and other members of the state executive council.
Mr. Amosun said his administration would not allow criminals to find comfort in the state.
“Kidnapping is alien to us in this part of the country and we have come to put an end to it as it now attracts 25 years jail term”, the governor said.
Speaking with journalists after the ceremony, Mr. Adekunbi said with the signing of the bill into law, it was no longer business as usual for criminals in the state.
On his part, the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Illiyasu said it was a signal to criminals to move away from in the state, warning that anyone caught for violent crime would “face the full wrath of the law”.

ASUU to Embark on One Week Nationwide Warning Strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has declared a one week warning strike to press home its demands to the federal government.

ASUU President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, told journalists in Abuja that the strike became necessary given government’s inability to address several demands and agreements it reached with the body.

According to him, government’s failure to adhere to, and implement the 2009 agreement prompted the body to ask its members nationwide to embark on a one-week warning strike from Wednesday, 16th November, 2016 to protest against government’s action.

ASUU also accused the government of turning the establishment of universities into constituency projects to score cheap political points, an approach the union is vehemently opposed to.

Speaking to journalists at the end of its emergency National Executive Council meeting in Abuja, ASUU National President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, stressed that despite several efforts by the union to get the government to respect their agreement, the government has failed to see reason with it.

He said this has created anxiety among the nation’s academic community.

ASUU enumerated areas of disagreement between the union and government to include payment of a fraction to staff entitlements and the denial of staff entitlements in respect of earned academic allowance amounting to about N128 billion.

He also listed lack of funding of universities for revitalization and the refusal to register the Nigerian Universities Pension Management Company by the Pension Commission.

Other grouses of the union include the introduction of the Treasury Single Account which it said is affecting university autonomy, decrease in budgetary allocation to education and the refusal by government to renegotiate the 2009 agreement which was due for renegotiation since 2012.
